How a PD meter traps a precise volume
Inside the meter, two oval gears, helical screws, or pistons mesh tightly. As oil pushes through, the rotating elements isolate a known volume in the clearances between the housing and the rotor. Each full revolution releases that fixed pocket downstream. A proximity sensor or a Hall-effect pickup counts the revolutions and sends a pulse train proportional to actual volume. Because the chamber geometry is machined to tight tolerance, every pulse represents exactly the same volume, no matter how thick or thin the oil feels.
Why high viscosity actually helps the measurement
Low-viscosity fluids like diesel or water can slip past the tiny gaps inside a PD meter. That slip causes an under-count. High-viscosity oils form a sealing film across those gaps instead. The slip drops to near zero, and the meter output becomes almost perfectly linear. In practice, an oval gear meter running 800 cP glycerine will show a K-factor within 0.1% of the water calibration. Crank the viscosity up to 50,000 cP, and the repeatability stays inside 0.05%. Most engineers skip this part: the meter does not need viscosity compensation electronics because the fluid itself does the sealing.
Where PD beats Coriolis and turbine meters on heavy oil
Coriolis mass flow meters also ignore viscosity, but a PD meter often costs 60% less in sizes from DN15 to DN50.
