Multiphase Flow Meters: Advanced Subsea and Surface Tracking for Complex Oil and Gas Streams

Quick Answer: Multiphase flow meters reduce the need for large test separators on offshore platforms and subsea wells. They measure oil, water, and gas fractions in one spool piece. Silver Automation Instruments supplies Coriolis, electromagnetic, and vortex meters for individual liquid and gas lines around the multiphase meter.

Why Complex Oil and Gas Streams Need a Different Approach

Most flow meters are designed for one phase. A Coriolis meter handles liquid well. A vortex meter handles gas well. But a live well stream does not come in one phase. It carries crude oil, formation water, associated gas, and sometimes sand or wax. On a floating production vessel, slug flow can hit the measurement skid every few minutes. That breaks the assumptions of a single phase meter.

In practice, a subsea well in the Browse Basin offshore Australia may produce 45 percent water cut and a gas volume fraction of 70 percent at the wellhead. A test separator could handle this, but it takes space and time. A multiphase flow meter tracks the mixed stream directly and reports total mass flow, phase fractions, and water liquid ratio without full separation.

Subsea Tracking: Less Hardware, Faster Data

Subsea multiphase meters sit on the seabed near the wellhead or manifold. They send data through the umbilical to the control room. Operators use the data for flow assurance, hydrate management, and well allocation. The alternative is a dedicated test line to the host platform. That is expensive when the tieback distance is 20 km or more.

A standard subsea multiphase meter body can be rated for 10,000 psi pressure and operate from -40 °C to 180 °C. Common line sizes are 3 inch, 4 inch, and 6 inch. The meter may report gas volume fraction from 0 to 100 percent and water liquid ratio from 0 to 100 percent. This hardware is much lighter than a separator vessel.

Silver Instruments does not sell the multiphase meter itself. We supply the surrounding liquid and gas measurement loops. A produced water line after bulk separation needs an electromagnetic flowmeter. A gas lift line needs a vortex flowmeter. A fuel gas line needs a thermal mass flowmeter. These meters verify the multiphase meter readings.

Surface Tracking: Well Testing Without a Full Test Separator

On land, the economics are different but the problem is similar. A pad in the Permian Basin may have 12 wells feeding one header. The operator needs per-well production data for regulatory reporting and reservoir management. A trailer-mounted multiphase meter can move from well to well. It measures each well in a few hours. That is faster than waiting on a test separator to stabilize.

We have seen this on customer sites in the Middle East. One producer in Oman used a multiphase meter on a skid to test high gas-cut wells. The meter reported total liquid rate within 3 percent relative error and gas rate within 5 percent relative error. The customer then installed a Silver Instruments SIVF series vortex flowmeter on the gas export line and a SICM series Coriolis mass flowmeter on the condensate line.

Where Silver Instruments Fits in a Multiphase Metering Project

For high water cut lines, a Silver Instruments SIEM series electromagnetic flowmeter is a good fit. It handles conductive produced water from 5 µS/cm upward and does not care about oil droplets. Sizes range from DN15 to DN600. Output is 4-20 mA HART, Modbus, or pulse. This works for water disposal wells and water injection lines.

For liquid hydrocarbon lines, a SICM series Coriolis mass flowmeter gives direct mass flow and density. It measures oil, condensate, and diesel from 0.5 kg/h to 500,000 kg/h depending on line size. Accuracy can be 0.1 percent of rate for liquids. The meter also reports temperature and density, which helps when the oil API gravity changes.

For gas lift, flare gas, and fuel gas, a SIVF series vortex flowmeter is common. It handles gas flow from 0.5 to 30 m/s and works with pressures up to PN100. The meter has no moving parts. In heavy liquid carryover, a multiphase meter or separator is still required upstream.

Pressure transmitters from Silver Instruments monitor wellhead pressure, separator pressure, and differential pressure across filters. Typical output is 4-20 mA HART. For hazardous areas, choose ATEX Zone 1 or IECEx certified models.

Data That You Should Send for a Quote

Send us pressure in bar, temperature in °C, pipe size in DN, and flow range in kg/h or m3/h. Include fluid density, viscosity in cP, gas volume fraction, and water cut if you have them. Based on these inputs, we select a meter type, line size, body material, and output.

Send us your pressure in bar, temperature in °C, pipe size in DN, and flow range. Our engineers will reply with a quote and a proposed model number. Tel: +86-25-68650347. WhatsApp: +86-25-52155837. WeChat: +86 15365082610.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I need a multiphase flow meter or a test separator?
If you need continuous per-well flow data without a large separator, a multiphase meter is faster. If you have space and only need occasional testing, a test separator may still work.

2. What data do you need to size a supporting flow meter?
Send us pressure in bar, temperature in °C, pipe size in DN, and flow range. Add fluid density, viscosity in cP, and conductivity in µS/cm if you know them.

3. Can Silver Instruments supply meters for high water cut produced water?
Yes. Electromagnetic flowmeters work well for produced water with high water cut. Common sizes are DN25 to DN300.

4. What output signals do your meters support for offshore control systems?
Most models provide 4-20 mA HART, pulse, Modbus RTU, or RS485. For offshore platforms, we can supply ATEX Zone 1 or IECEx certified models.

5. What pressure ratings are available for subsea or high pressure gas lines?
Surface meter bodies can be rated for PN40, PN63, or PN100. Send us the maximum operating pressure and we will check the pressure rating for your line size.
