Mass Flowmeters & Coriolis Effect Flow Meters for Food and Pharma Infrastructure

Quick Answer: Coriolis effect flow meters measure mass flow, density, and temperature in one instrument. For food and pharma batching, dosing, and CIP loops, this direct mass measurement reduces over-dosing and off-spec product. Silver Automation Instruments supplies sanitary Coriolis mass flowmeters from DN15 to DN150 with 4-20 mA HART output for dairy, beverage, syrup, and API feed lines.

Food and pharma plants need flow meters that survive frequent cleaning, deliver repeatable batch control, and minimize contamination risk. Silver Automation Instruments has supplied Coriolis mass flowmeters to plants across Southeast Asia, Australia, Latin America, and the Middle East. A Coriolis meter reads mass flow directly. It does not need temperature or pressure compensation to estimate mass.

A brewery in Thailand replaced a turbine meter on a yeast dosing skid because the turbine bearings wore out every 8 months. The new Silver Instruments CMF015 sanitary Coriolis meter has no moving parts in contact with the fluid. That change removed bearing replacement from the maintenance plan.

What Makes a Coriolis Mass Flow Meter Suitable for Food and Pharma

Sanitary process connections are the first filter. Silver Instruments supplies tri-clamp, DIN 11851, and SMS connections on its Coriolis mass flowmeters. Wetted surface roughness is often specified at Ra 0.8 µm or better. Standard wetted material is 316L stainless steel. Seals can be EPDM or PTFE depending on the CIP chemical.

Food and pharma lines run hot caustic and acid for cleaning. The meter body must handle thermal shock. Silver Instruments Coriolis meters are rated for fluid temperatures from minus 50 °C to 200 °C. Some models use Hastelloy C22 for aggressive pharmaceutical solvents. The electronics support 4-20 mA HART, pulse, and Modbus RTU.

Accuracy matters most in recipe batching. A typical Silver Instruments Coriolis meter has mass flow accuracy of ±0.1 percent to ±0.2 percent of rate. Density accuracy is usually ±0.0005 g/cm3. This is enough to detect the difference between syrup concentrate and diluted syrup in a beverage line.

Typical Applications in Food and Beverage Plants

We have seen sugar syrup blending in Indonesia, milk pasteurizer feed in Vietnam, flavors dosing in a Saudi juice plant, and beer wort transfer in Mexico. A magnetic flow meter works for water but not for fats, oils, or solvents. A Coriolis meter covers all of them.

In a dairy plant, raw milk enters a pasteurizer at a controlled kg/h rate. The flow signal goes to a proportional valve. If the flow meter drifts, pasteurization time is wrong and the plant may have to re-circulate or dump product. A Silver Instruments CMF025 on a DN25 milk line handles 0 to 3000 kg/h with high turn-down.

For breweries and wineries, the same meter can handle wort, beer, wine, and CIP return. The density reading helps monitor extract or sugar content. In a winery in Chile, a customer used the density signal to stop a must transfer when sugar content dropped below target. This removed one manual sampling step per batch.

Pharmaceutical Dosing and Reactor Feed

Pharmaceutical lines are often smaller. DN15 and DN10 meters are common for API dosing, solvent feed, and sodium hydroxide injection. Here the batch volume may be only 50 kg. Silver Instruments often configures a Coriolis meter in batch mode with totalizer accuracy of ±0.05 percent for controlled stop conditions.

In a contract manufacturing site in India, a customer doses isopropyl alcohol into a reactor. The line pressure is 4 bar at 25 °C. The Coriolis meter sends a 4-20 mA HART signal to the DCS. The DCS closes a block valve when the totalized mass reaches 220 kg. The previous setup used a load cell on a day tank.
