Mag Meters: Solid-State Low Pressure Drop Industrial Fluid Tracking Sensors

Quick Answer: Mag meters track conductive liquid flow with no moving parts and almost zero pressure drop. Use them for water, wastewater, chemicals, and seawater from DN15 to DN2000. Silver Automation Instruments supplies these meters with 4-20 mA HART, pulse, and RS485 output for industrial tracking.

What Makes a Mag Meter Solid-State and Low Pressure Drop

A magnetic flow meter has no rotors, gears, bearings, or bypass channels inside the pipe. The sensor is a short pipe section with a PTFE or hard rubber liner and two or more metal electrodes. The bore is open and matches the pipe diameter. Pressure loss stays below 0.05 bar for most water applications. Low pressure loss matters for pump sizing in Indonesia, Vietnam, Nigeria, and Saudi Arabia where power costs are high.

The solid-state design removes mechanical wear. There are no seals that leak and no parts that jam on sludge or slurry. Wastewater lift stations and chemical dosing skids benefit most because no filter or moving mechanism clogs.

Industrial Fluid Tracking Applications

A paint manufacturer in Southeast Asia asked us for a meter that would not restrict solvent flow. We supplied a DN50 PTFE-lined mag meter with 316L electrodes. The meter tracked flow from 0.5 to 15 m3/h with no added pump load.

In Australia and Chile, desalination plants use mag meters on seawater feed, brine discharge, and chemical injection lines. For seawater, we recommend titanium or Hastelloy C electrodes and a polyurethane or PFA liner. Standard pressure rating is PN16 but PN40 is common for high pressure brine lines.

Key Specifications for Industrial Fluid Tracking

Standard options include pipe size DN15 to DN2000, PTFE or hard rubber liners, 316L or Hastelloy C electrodes, and output signals of 4-20 mA HART, pulse, or RS485. Accuracy is ±0.5 percent of reading. Minimum fluid conductivity is 5 µS/cm. Pressure ratings go from PN10 to PN40. Temperature range is minus 25 to 120 °C for PTFE lined sensors.

For a standard DN15 to DN200 water or wastewater line, the Silver Instruments compact mag meter with PTFE liner and 316L electrodes is the default recommendation. For DN250 to DN2000 lines or remote sites, choose the remote converter version.

For wastewater, choose hard rubber liner and 316L electrodes. For acids, use PTFE or PFA liner with tantalum electrodes. We recommend remote electronics for hot or flooded installations.

One Installation Detail Engineers Often Miss

The pipe must stay full at all times. Air bubbles or partially filled pipes cause unstable readings. Install the sensor in a low point or a rising pipe run. Keep 5D straight upstream and 2D downstream from the sensor. D means pipe diameter. For sludge or dirty water, add a grounding ring or use grounding electrodes. A grounding ring removes stray current noise.

Low Pressure Drop Reduces Total Cost

A full bore DN80 mag meter at 50 m3/h typically adds less than 0.02 bar pressure loss. A mechanical flowmeter with a cone or gear may add 0.2 bar or more. The difference means smaller pumps and lower energy use over 10 years. In one Philippine water utility project, the engineering team selected mag meters because the old orifice plates caused too much pressure drop during peak demand.
